Your Mac does the work. Why local AI shouldn't be a subscription.
You bought the Mac. You pay for the electricity. When an AI model runs locally, your processor and memory do the work. Why should the tool stop working because you stopped paying a monthly fee?
Privacy is the first reason we build local AI. Your speech and notes do not need to travel to a server to be processed. But putting the work on your Mac also changes what you are paying the software company to provide: more local use consumes your resources, not more of its cloud compute.
We sell software ourselves. Engineering, design, testing, and support deserve to be paid for. We believe a customer should be able to buy a local tool and keep using it, with new purchases tied to new capabilities or services.
Our position: if the core AI feature runs on hardware the customer already owns, a recurring charge should pay for a clearly recurring service—not merely keep the installed feature unlocked.
What a software subscription is supposed to buy
If a company processes your audio on its servers or hosts your files, it has infrastructure to operate while you use the service. Cloud inference, hosted storage, shared workspaces, live data, and contracted support can all justify a recurring bill.
Paying for those services is different from paying to keep an installed feature unlocked. Customers should be able to tell which one they are buying.
Local AI moves inference costs onto your hardware
Cloud AI turns usage into a vendor expense. More audio, tokens, images, or video usually means more rented compute. A subscription can make that unpredictable cost manageable.
With local AI, your computer runs the model. Transcribing another hour uses more of your Mac’s processing time and power. It does not require the developer to rent another hour of cloud inference for that transcription.
Model integration, compatibility fixes, distribution, and support still cost money. Maintaining a good Mac app is substantial work. But those costs are different from a server bill that grows with each minute of speech a customer processes.

Local does not mean the developer works for free
A local app needs maintenance, and developers need a way to fund it. A monthly access fee is one business model, not the only one.
A one-time license pays for the version offered today. Paid major upgrades can fund meaningful new generations. Optional cloud features can carry their own recurring price. Team support, managed deployment, and professional services can be sold to customers who need them.
Customers can choose whether a new version is worth buying without losing the version they already paid for. Developers can charge for meaningful improvements without making an existing tool expire.
The five-question subscription test
Before paying monthly for a local AI app, ask five simple questions:
- Can the core feature run without the vendor's inference servers?
- Who supplies the processing power, memory, storage, and electricity?
- Which specific recurring service does the subscription fund?
- If payment stops, does a remote service disappear—or does an installed local feature get locked?
- Would the core tool still work if the vendor stopped operating?
A subscription price alone does not answer these questions. Look for a clear explanation of what keeps being delivered and what happens to your installed software when you cancel.
Privacy without ownership is incomplete
For us, privacy is local AI’s most important advantage. A conversation can be transcribed on your Mac without sending the audio to a cloud transcription provider.
Ownership adds another kind of control: your ability to keep using the software without renewing a subscription. A private transcript should not require a monthly payment just to use the local tool that created it.
Local processing and licensing are separate questions. A one-time license can still require activation. Customers deserve clear answers about both where their data goes and what their purchase lets them keep using.
When a local AI subscription is fair
Some products are genuinely hybrid. They run a fast or sensitive path locally, then provide optional cloud models, encrypted sync, collaboration, remote automation, or live data. A subscription can be completely reasonable for those services.
We would rather see those services sold separately from the local tool. Cancel the hosted service, and its features stop. The on-device software you bought should remain usable.
Recurring infrastructure can justify recurring revenue. Local inference by itself does not.

Not every local AI company needs to copy our exact price. Different products have different scope, teams, and support obligations. But the ownership principle should be the default: if the customer supplies the compute and the capability can live on their device, sell them the tool.
Buy the tool. Subscribe to the service.
Charge once for durable on-device software. Charge again for a meaningful upgrade. Charge periodically for infrastructure and service that actually recur. But when the customer's computer does the work, do not turn its own compute into a monthly meter.
Your Mac does the work. You should own the tool.
