How Live Captions Work - Open any meeting, video, or podcast. NotchLive captures system audio or your mic via ScreenCaptureKit, transcribes speech with on-device Whisper AI, and displays live captions near the top of your Mac workspace.
Speaker-aware meeting records - Version 1.9 adds local speaker attribution on supported Apple silicon Macs and Participant Review for correcting speaker labels before using the transcript.
Governed participant ontology - Automatic diarization provides meeting-local evidence, not identity. Your reviewed participant map becomes the authoritative structure for Meeting Analytics, exports, saved output, Meeting Intelligence, and MCP results.
Meeting Analytics - Measure words, turns, speaking time, pace, conversation share, balance, and attribution coverage from the reviewed meeting record. The calculations come from transcript evidence, not a generative model.
A lot more languages with MCP - Enable read-only active Timeline access so Codex or Claude can follow finalized captions and translate the same conversation into multiple requested languages at once.
Focus and Live Timeline - Follow the latest caption in Focus, or expand Timeline to scroll, search, copy, and export the current live transcript while new captions continue arriving.
Privacy First - Speech recognition and speaker attribution run locally. Speaker labels are meeting-local, not persistent voice identities. Live captions can remain temporary, and saved data or AI access exists only when you choose it.
Hearing Accessibility - Live captions on Mac help hard-of-hearing users and anyone who wants spoken audio to be easier to follow in real time.
Free Forever - Live captions, all Whisper AI models, system audio and mic capture, keyboard shortcuts, unlimited use. Pro upgrade ($24.99 one-time) adds saved meetings, participant review, translation, Meeting Analytics, Meeting Intelligence, Voice Notes, and local AI connections. Versioned data bundles are available from Settings for backup and transfer.
FAQ
Does it work with Zoom/Meet/Teams? - Yes. Captures system audio, so it works with any app.
Does it need internet? - Only for initial model and language pack downloads. Everything else runs on-device.
What languages? - Whisper transcribes 90+ languages. Translation to 20 languages via Apple Translation (macOS 15+).
Macs without a notch? - Works great! The caption bar appears at the top center of your screen.
Apple Silicon only? - Recommended, but Intel Macs are supported.
How is NotchLive different from Apple Live Captions? - NotchLive can use the MacBook notch or a floating Focus or Timeline window. Timeline adds live scroll, search, copy, and export while captions continue arriving. NotchLive also adds real-time translation, session recording, and transcript export.
Does NotchLive identify people by their voice? - No. It assigns anonymous, meeting-local speaker labels and does not create persistent voiceprints.
Can I correct speaker labels? - Yes. Participant Review lets you rename, merge, reassign, split, or leave speech unresolved.
Is Meeting Analytics generated by AI? - No. It is calculated directly from the transcript and reviewed participant map.
What can Codex and Claude access? - Only the data surfaces you explicitly enable through NotchLive's read-only local MCP server. Enabled active captions can also be translated into multiple requested languages by the connected AI client.
